Calcium chloride is an inorganic compound composed of calcium (Ca²⁺) and chloride (Cl⁻) ions, with the chemical formula CaCl₂. It exists in anhydrous form (CaCl₂) or hydrate form (such as CaCl₂ · 2H₂O, CaCl₂ · 6H₂O), usually as colorless crystals or white particles/powders.
Calcium chloride is easily soluble in water, with extremely high solubility and significant hygroscopicity (absorbing moisture from the air). It naturally exists in seawater, salt lakes, or certain minerals, but in industry it is often obtained through the reaction of limestone with hydrochloric acid or as a byproduct of the Solvay process for alkali production.
Strong Hygroscopicity: It easily absorbs moisture and even deliquescence into liquid, widely used as a desiccant.
High Solubility: It has extremely high solubility in water (about 74.5 g/100 mL at 20 ℃), and the dissolution process releases heat violently.
Low Freezing Point: The freezing point of an aqueous solution is significantly lowered (such as the freezing point of a 30% solution is about -50 ℃), which is suitable for snow melting agents.
Melting Point/Boiling Point: Anhydrous calcium chloride has a melting point of approximately 772 ℃ and a boiling point greater than 1600 ℃.
Complexation: Can form complexes with ammonia, ethanol, etc. (such as CaCl ₂ · 4NH ∝).
Reacts with sulfates and carbonates to form precipitates (such as CaSO4 and CaCO3).
Can react with oxides such as silica at high temperatures.
High concentration solutions are corrosive to metals and concrete, and should be used with caution.
Snow melting agent: lowers the melting point of ice and snow, quickly melting road snow.
Dustproof agent: sprayed on dirt roads to suppress dust by utilizing its hygroscopicity.
Desiccant: Used for drying gases such as air, nitrogen, hydrocarbons, or industrial equipment to prevent moisture.
Concrete additives: accelerate cement hardening and improve early strength.
Oil extraction: Prepare high-density drilling fluid to stabilize oil well pressure.
Food additives: used as coagulants (such as tofu production), preservatives, or electrolyte supplements (sports drinks).
Medical use: Used to treat hypocalcemia, as an ingredient in anti allergic injections, or as an anticoagulant for blood banks.
Wastewater treatment: Sedimentation of pollutants such as phosphates and fluorides, and adjustment of pH value.
Refrigeration system: used as a low-temperature refrigerant (such as a cooling bath).
Laboratory reagents: used for drying gases, catalyzing reactions, or preparing other calcium salts.
Agriculture: Foliar fertilizers supplement calcium elements and regulate soil pH.
Plastic industry: as an additive to improve material properties.
