Polyferric Sulfate (PFS), chemically represented as [Fe₂(OH)ₙ(SO₄)₃−n/₂]ₘ, is an inorganic polymeric coagulant widely used in water and wastewater treatment. It is synthesized through the polymerization of ferric sulfate (Fe₂(SO₄)₃) under controlled conditions, resulting in a high-molecular-weight compound with enhanced coagulation properties.
As a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional coagulants like Aluminum Sulfate (alum) or ferric chloride, PFS has gained prominence in industrial and municipal water treatment processes. Its unique structure, combining hydroxyl and sulfate groups with iron ions, enables efficient removal of contaminants through charge neutralization, adsorption, and flocculation mechanisms.
