Product Description:

Calcium chloride is a chemical compound made up of calcium (Ca²⁺) and chloride (Cl⁻) ions, with the chemical formula CaCl₂. It can be found in either an anhydrous form (CaCl₂) or in a hydrated form, such as CaCl₂·2H₂O or CaCl₂·6H₂O. Usually, it appears as colorless crystals or white particles/powders.

When placed in water, calcium chloride dissolves readily due to its high solubility and strong hygroscopic nature, meaning it has a tendency to absorb moisture from the air. While it occurs naturally in seawater, salt lakes, and certain minerals, industries typically acquire it through reactions like the combination of limestone and hydrochloric acid, or as a byproduct of the Solvay process used in alkali production.

Features:

Physical Properties

Strong hygroscopicity: It easily absorbs moisture and even deliquescence into liquid, widely used as a desiccant.

High solubility: It has extremely high solubility in water (about 74.5 g/100 mL at 20 ℃), and the dissolution process releases heat violently.

Low freezing point: The freezing point of an aqueous solution is significantly lowered (such as the freezing point of a 30% solution is about -50 ℃), which is suitable for snow melting agents.

Melting point/boiling point: Anhydrous calcium chloride has a melting point of approximately 772 ℃ and a boiling point greater than 1600 ℃.

Chemical Properties

Complexation: Can form complexes with ammonia, ethanol, etc. (such as CaCl 2 · 4NH∝).

Reactivity:

  • Reacts with sulfates and carbonates to form precipitates (such as CaSO 4 and CaCO 3 ).
  • Can react with oxides such as silica at high temperatures.
Safety

Caution: High concentration solutions are corrosive to metals and concrete, and should be used with caution.

Applications:

Roads and Transportation

Snow melting agent: Calcium compounds are used to lower the melting point of ice and snow, facilitating the quick removal of road snow.

Dustproof agent: These compounds are also effective when sprayed on dirt roads to suppress dust by leveraging their hygroscopic properties.

Industrial Sector

Desiccant: Calcium compounds are crucial for drying gases such as air, nitrogen, hydrocarbons, or industrial equipment in order to prevent moisture accumulation.

Concrete additives: They play a key role in accelerating cement hardening and enhancing early strength in concrete structures.

Oil extraction: These compounds are utilized to prepare high-density drilling fluid, which helps stabilize oil well pressure during extraction processes.

Food and Medicine

Food additives: Calcium compounds are utilized as coagulants in processes like tofu production, as preservatives, and as electrolyte supplements in sports drinks.

Medical use: They are employed to treat conditions like hypocalcemia, as components in anti-allergic injections, and as anticoagulants in blood banks.

Environmental Protection and Chemical Industry

Wastewater treatment: Calcium compounds aid in the sedimentation of pollutants such as phosphates and fluorides, as well as in the adjustment of pH levels in water treatment processes.

Refrigeration system: They are utilized as low-temperature refrigerants, particularly in cooling baths where precise temperature control is required.

Laboratory reagents: Calcium compounds find applications in laboratories for tasks such as drying gases, catalyzing reactions, and preparing other calcium-based salts.

Other Purposes

Agriculture: Foliar fertilizers containing calcium compounds help supplement calcium elements in plants and regulate soil pH levels for optimal growth.

Plastic industry: They serve as additives to improve the properties of plastic materials, enhancing their durability and performance.
