The Versatile Uses of Calcium Chloride in Industry

De-icing and road applications

Calcium chloride is used for ice melting on roads and other surfaces. Solid calcium chloride releases heat when dissolved in water. Select the product and application procedure for the expected conditions, surface compatibility and applicable site requirements rather than assuming complete prevention of ice formation.

Moisture control and dehydration

Moisture-control applications require a suitable grade and process design. Confirm compatibility with the actual gas or process stream, the moisture target and handling requirements before specifying calcium chloride. A general drying-agent description should not be interpreted as approval for every gas.

Refrigeration brines

Calcium chloride solutions are used in refrigeration applications. Crystallization temperature depends on concentration, so there is no single freezing-temperature range that applies to all solutions. Review the concentration-specific technical data and equipment requirements before choosing a brine.

Concrete acceleration: important restrictions

Calcium chloride can be used as an accelerating admixture, but it is not universally suitable for construction. The American Concrete Institute cautions against its use in steel-reinforced concrete and concrete containing aluminium conduits because of corrosion concerns. Confirm the project specification and the responsible engineer's requirements; do not assume that faster setting guarantees greater final strength.
